The Wait Finally Paid Off

“I am excited to inform you that I have been called to two interviews already ” It was a cause for celebration in the whole office when I received a text that one of the participants now a friend was called for an Interview barely two weeks after our interaction.

The year is almost coming to a close. We often pass off New Year's resolutions as a joke but as time passes and we feel like we have nothing to show. Honestly, it hurts!! I was having a conversation with my cousin as we reminisced over the past year and she said -seemed like she whispered because I felt the same way. “It is almost the end of the year and I feel like I haven't done anything with my life. ”

What happens to us when we feel like we have waited far too long and nothing seems to change. Today however Mary shares her story…

I was working as a clerk in a hospital in Eldoret for six years. My husband at the time was working in Nairobi when we got married. The travelling costs became expensive as I had to travel to and fro to visit.

I decided to resign and relocate to Nairobi. A decision that was difficult to make at the time and one I had to run over my mind a few times. The plan was that I would look for another job back in the city.

Here I was a stay home mother. It sounds so real when you say it out loud. This had now become a reality. We were blessed with two lovely children that I adore. I appreciated the time I got to spend with my children and watched them as they made little milestones. I always hoped to have the time to nature them and bring them up before I started to actively look for a full time job.

Easier said than done. The transition was tough as I was so accustomed to working. I was at home all day with my children. The day seemed longer when you stay in the house. If that was not enough, I was constantly at the center of criticism and judgment from the society as no one appreciated the fact that being a mother is a full time job   The transition was tough as I was so accustomed to working.

I opted to stay indoors.

I stopped going out because of fear of being looked down upon.

It was now time for me to get back to the workspace. The whole process felt like a nightmare. I tried making applications from all avenues at my disposal without any success.

Where was my big break?

The wait seemed to be taking too long.

I was able to rewrite my C.V and even highlighted how I can add value to an organization.I learnt how to write a targeted resume.

My sister in law recommended I take up Almah Interview Ready. I was very hesitant at first because I had heard stories of how people get scammed in a desperate search of a job. It took me a whole month before I finally made the decision to attend. I mean, I wasn’t going to lose anything so I paid my registration fee and attended the program. I didn’t know much about the program and wondered whether they would rewrite my CV for me or even get me a job.

I was in for a treat because I gained much more than I actually anticipated. This was unlike any other program because the focus on you as an individual. The would get to the core on where you seemed stuck and give you the proper tools and guidance in preparing, applying and even how you show up in an Interview. I gained my confidence back.

This was exactly what I needed.

What stood out for me during the program was how honest we should be to ourselves and to allow God be the center and part of our process.

Fully equipped with the right tool, I rewrote my CV (Curriculum Vitae) and aligned it to the values of the organizations I am hoping to work for. I am proud to say that I am now working as a customer care representative in an automotive company in Nairobi and I have managed to add value to the organization.

To all stay home mums who want to transition back into the workforce. Getting back to work can be terrifying and almost impossible as a year(s) passes and you seem to still be stuck.
